Most collection conversations go badly because they happen unprepared, at a bad moment, and under emotional pressure. Preparing in advance changes the tone of the call considerably.
Before the call
- Know the loan: lender name, amount borrowed, outstanding as you understand it, and last payment date.
- Know what you can actually afford this month — a figure you can defend.
- Decide in advance what you will not agree to.
- Choose a time and place where you can speak without being overheard or rushed.
During the call
Note the caller's name, the company they represent, and the time. Stay factual and brief. Ask for a written statement of the outstanding amount and the breakdown of charges. If you are told something significant, ask for it in writing or by email.
What not to do
Do not promise a payment date to end an uncomfortable call. Do not share OTPs, passwords, card details or bank login credentials with anyone, under any circumstances. Do not agree to take a new loan in order to close an existing one.
If the call crosses a line
Abuse, threats, false allegations, disclosure of your debt to unrelated people, or repeated contact at unreasonable hours are not acceptable. Record the details and keep them together in one place. A clear log is what turns a complaint into an escalation that gets attention.
SETTRIX helps customers prepare for these conversations and, where authorized, supports the communication itself. We cannot guarantee that all collection contact will stop.
